Sailors' Outreach

Walking down a busy sidewalk in downtown Singapore in 1968, Missionary Cliff Hunnicutt and his son Clifford were heartbroken at the sight of a very young and very intoxicated American sailor on the arms of two prostitutes obviously intent on relieving the poor young man of his money—and no doubt leaving him with an unwanted disease.  There and then, right on the sidewalk, the missionary—himself a former U.S. Navy sailor—and his son bowed their heads and wept before the Lord.  The realization hit them deep in their hearts that the young man was somebody's son. "From this day forward," Cliff told his wife and family that night, "I have pledged to do everything in our power to reach as many U.S. sailors and ships for Christ as possible while they are docked in this port.  God spoke to me clearly that I must do all I can to win our own American young men while we are reaching out to others."

A printed invitation brochure was quickly prepared with a personal introduction of the missionary and his family, and an invitation to a home-cooked southern meal and a promise of warm, Christian encouragement.  On the cover of the folder were the words "Welcome to the Haven of Rest for Sailors in Singapore"   The Harvester Haven of Rest ministry was born on that sidewalk in 1968, and has been alive in the hearts of God's servants from that day to the present.
